'Take off your shoes and socks for evermore.'
This line from one of Whalebone Polly’s songs summed up for me the mood
of relaxation, music and fun produced at a recent house concert in
Bristol promoted by www.healthyconcerts.com
Paul Chi singer, guitarist, improviser, songwriter and founder of
Healthy Concerts, Whalebone Polly a local trio of singers (close harmony
and strings) and a duo called Nizlopi played for over three hours.
Nizlopi, Luke Concannon (guitar/boron/vocals) and John Parker (double
bass/ vocal percussion) describe them selves rather reluctantly as
‘maybe funk or hip hop folk’ Well, however the music is described, the
confident contrasting styles went down well with the Saturday night
audience.
Healthy Concerts is described in the publicity as an opportunity and
invitation to put quality of living first, encouraging Live performance
skills, new music, smoke-free venues, alternatives to alcohol and
entertainment for the whole family.
Paul invited me to submit my own "whole person" profile to the website
so that I could share and affirm my experience of the creative & healing
arts in my life with the cyber community. But there is an even more
exciting prospect. Apparently, any member can log on to the site and use
it to create and publicise their own events! Gigs in digs - original
acoustic music performed for an intimate audience in a living room or
garden - is the most popular of these.
Paul says, "many people lead fast and highly stressed lives and he claims
there is no better way to slow down and get back in touch with yourself
than relaxing to live music in the home."
You are asking yourself why would fast rising stars like Nizlopi want to
play in your living room ?
Luke says, "gigs in digs nurture Nizlopi, the connection with the
audience is stronger, the music comes across more clearly and Nizlopi
can enjoy it too..."
In the words of Nikki Marshall of the Guardian, who recently hosted a
Nizlopi concert in her London home, "As concert experiences go, it was
peerless. No stage, no distance, no crappy sound systems..." Nikki
Marshall (G2)
In the Bristol house concert I attended the audience was encouraged to
join in, to sing or dance. I certainly didn’t expect to but there I
was in bare feet dancing along with the rest of the audience by the end.
Healthy concerts are looking for more venues in Bristol. Maybe next time
they can bring it home to you!
