There is a government move to make it very difficult for musicians to perform live in small venues, or for schools, pubs and charities to raise money for causes through musical events. The new legislation will inhibit the central role music making has in our lives and communities... website: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/licensing/

Extract:
But if non-smokers move in restricted circles, it seems as if we’re in good, and increasing, company. Paul Chi, a Brighton-based music promoter, became so sick of the ever-present haze of fag smoke in bars that he founded Gigs in Digs, where the artist comes and plays in your own home. Its most famous proponents are Nizlopi, that exuberant duo whose JCB Song got to No 1 just before Christmas. “I came up with this whole idea of putting on gigs that had an ethos," says Chi. “And the ethos was low noise, non-smoking, the choice of whether to have alcohol or not, and child-friendly. I got into the whole idea of them being accessible."
So Chi’s concerts are a healthy option for the under-18s, which is another leap forward, because teenagers are continuing to take up smoking at an alarming rate. Kids copy their musical heroes, and if they hang out in smoky bars, then smoking and drinking is what teens will aspire to.
But the image is misleading because only about a fifth of the adult population actually smokes and, according to Chi, the idea that all musicians are slaves to the weed couldn’t be further from the truth.
“I know many musicians who hardly drink and don’t smoke, but they’ll play anywhere because it’s the only way they’ll get any work."

NIZLOPI
The JCB single was no.1 in the singles charts pre Christmas week. Some astounded observers are calling the Leamington lads a novely act and their current success a fluke. We know better...
"Nizlopi started out in Livingrooms... it was on the Richard and Judy show on TV" says Dae, a young girl who remembers Nizlopi playing in HER family home LIVE (not on top of the pops) years before the mass media picked up on the JCB song as a potential xmas hit. It's the sort of experience you don't forget, and I bet many Brighton folk can recall special Nizlopi moments on the gigs in digs scene. Its a lifestyle that Luke and John have embraced and really want to talk up, even in the middle of making their prime-time TV debut!
So where did it all start and where is it going?

In 1994 I launched Healthy Concerts, a project that introduced the singer-songwriter and composer-performer to a brand new audience through a network of living room, garden and community venues. Our nickname for these events is ‘gigs in digs’. These carefully arranged and uniquely marketed events establish conditions conducive to a healthy quality of living and excellent communication between artist and audience. Healthy Concerts encapsulate the following cultural and social values:
‘Small is beautiful’ – intimate home settings – alternatives to alcohol – non-smoking - neighbourhood involvement - friendly atmosphere – unplugged music (low noise) – participants (artists and audience) of all ages and from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Thinking of myself as the original Healthy Concerts mentor (rather than promoter) I began several years ago to develop a Mentor Partnership pack based on my experiences of putting on literally hundreds of gigs in digs. Web designer Chris Kirkland was extraordinarily successful in translating these ideas into interactive online facilities for members, which included the means to create, publish and advertise events and profiles independently. Events are created by members FOR members. Members can be mentors, hosts, artists and audience interchangeably.
In 2004 we introduced a new idea for using existing resources to benefit the community, The Lemon & Honey Club, a different way of thinking about art, artists, health and entertainment. These events, produced by the members themselves, showcase the creative and healing arts in colourful combination. For example, one house concert incorporated a performance of songs at the piano, poetry reading, a demonstration of yoga breathing and a talk on nutrition. This concept, supported by the online resources available to every member, makes Healthy Concerts uniquely inclusive and accessible.
