``In 1994 I removed myself from Brighton pubs and bars and launched Healthy Concerts - community house concerts. This initiative set a precedent for the enjoyment of popular music in non-smoking environments. The 1st of July 2007 is a
day to celebrate. I can go anywhere in town and enjoy a meal in comfort or listen to a band - discover the bands I`ve been missing all this time!. Above all else, I can sing my songs in public places that were off-putting to non-smokers like me before.`` Paul Chi.
Brighton Climate Change www.brightonclimatechange.org is a new group examining the impact of lifestyle on the local and global environment. We are asked to take personal responsibility in helping to reduce pollution and to lobby local authorities and businesses to adopt policies and take actions that increase sustainability and protect the life of the Ecosystems that we all depend on and are inseparable from. Brighton Healthy Concerts echo that endeavor in proposing that we stand to live a happier and healthier life if we reduce the stresses and pollutants that directly impact on our own bodies. That`s why green activist Jaya Shunyata and I have teamed up to organise a musical celebration of the non-smoking legislation that comes into effect on the 1st of July 2007 and promises a breathe of fresh air when it comes to public entertainment and eating out.
The banning of smoking from pubs and restaurants is likely to lead to a boom in the use of patio heaters, as pubs try to provide outdoor spaces for smoking - warns Jacob Skinner, spokesperson for Brighton Climate Change.
A patio heater emits as much CO2 in an hour as a small car does over 35miles! Warm jumpers and quit smoking programmes are to be encouraged.
