Tonight`s Concert by Saidi Kanda and Paul Chi includes an introduction to the The African Way - a unique course in home-made entertainment. Come along and have a look at some of the amazing instruments Saidi has made. There will also be a short Permaculture game Elements of a garden, presented by World Family.

Internationally renowned Tanzanian musician; award winning drummer, multi-instrumentalist and instrument maker, Saidi Kanda... invites YOU to join his band!

Experience the home tour; a series of intimate house concerts preceded by in-depth teaching sessions that enable students to fully embody the kind of celebration and festive spirit inherent in traditional African village culture. These will be family friendly events welcoming people of all ages and levels of ability, and held in the homes and communities of the participants.

Saidi Kanda will begin the home-made entertainment course by sharing inspirational stories from his childhood. There is so much to discover...

  • The art of instrument making

  • Music for voices, strings, wind and percussion

  • Learning to play your own home-made instrument - solo performances and ensemble works

  • Experience in performing individually and together

  • Choir practice - an exhilarating union of voices in 2, 3 and 4 parts

  • Spontaneous creation - "jamming"

  • Dancing and costumes etc.

  • Each of the events in the series will finish with a short concert by Saidi and friends, and the series will culminate in a community festival - time for the students to shine!

"Saidi Kanda is not just an outstanding percussionist, he's also a stunning vocalist and is musically gifted on all sorts of levels...His feel for the music and his charisma makes him a joy to be with on stage." – Alan Skidmore, Jazz artist.
